The Romantic Carnival of Venice
Famous for its fascinating timeless character, grand waterways and historical architecture, the beautiful floating city of Venice is also well known for hosting the colourful, “Carnival of Venice” festival. Taking place during the ten days leading up to Shrove Tuesday, the unique Venice Carnival is a pre-Lent festival and is celebrated throughout Italy. Held annually, the enchanting Carnival is an event famed for its elaborate masks and busy entertainment programme.
Originating from the 11th century, the open-air carnival of Venice originally consisted of two months worth of lively festivities and an array of actors, artists, acrobats and musicians who turned the great squares into stages for performances. Regular processions moved slowly down the narrow streets and over the bridges with Venetians competing with each other for the most elaborate costumes and masks possible, and masqueraders often taking on the identity of fantasy characters. This fell into decline during the 18th century but was fortunately revived in 1979 with much success. It is today a fantastic opportunity for all involved to don a mask (the more elaborate the better) and parade around the city celebrating Lent and the wonderful Venetian culture. The carnival has now become one of the world's most popular attractions, enticing hundreds of thousands of visitors to Venice every year.
Love is in the Air
With its picturesque scenery and inherently passionate ambience, every day is filled with romance in Venice, and amongst a jam-packed programme of daily festivities, The Valentine’s Feast always plays an integral role in the Venice Carnival. Celebrated from February 4th to 21st, it provides a fantastic opportunity for all to soak up the romantic charm of the beautiful city, its spectacular views and brightly illuminated palaces. The Venetian Valentine’s programme offers an array of sensual entertainment options, from provocative and alluring burlesque artists to colourful musicals, romantic Grand Balls in the Enchanted Palace and not forgetting one of the most popular events during the Carnival, The Valentine’s Masquerade Ball, held on February 14th. Located in a prestigious and highly distinctive 15th century Venetian Palace, only a stone’s throw away from the train station, the Valentine Masquerade Ball is one of the most sought after and extravagant evenings during the carnival period. Providing a feast for the eyes, handsome waiters greet all guests with a delicious range of canapés before inviting them inside the Palace to celebrate in true Venetian style in extravagant costumes and elaborate masks. After the sumptuous, candlelit gala dinner has been served, the party and celebrations continue on the ground floor with a host of live entertainment including dancers, a professional DJ and an unlimited bar.
A popular event, the Valentine’s Masquerade Ball presents a fantastic opportunity for couples and individuals to celebrate in a totally unique and memorable way.
