Strictly Come Dancing - The First Live Show
The first live show of 2018 certainly didn’t disappoint with stunning performances from the pros and incredibly promising first dances from the celebrities. Joint top of the table was Ashley Roberts and partner Pasha Kovalev and Steps’ Faye Tozer and Giovanni Pernince, two very different dances with Faye performing a cha cha cha and Ashely a Viennese Waltz. With two variations of Waltz shown in the first live show, we have all you need to know about this ballroom dance style.
What is the Waltz?
The Waltz is an elegant and romantic ballroom dance that evolved from folk dances in Germany in the mid 18th Century and consists of smooth, round and flowing movements. One of the most popular ballroom dances, the Waltz is characterised by its rise and fall action and three step sequence consisting of a step forward or backwards, a step to the side, and a step closing the feet together. Waltz music is written in 3/4 time and counted as ‘1,2,3 - 1,2,3’.
Who performed a Waltz on the first show?
A romantic dance that is a delight to watch, British Paralympian Lauren Steadman and partner AJ Pritchard danced the Waltz to ’I’m Kissing You' by Des’ree receiving 25 points from the judges and landing themselves sixth in the table.
Ex-Pussycat Dolls band member Ashely Roberts and her partner Pasha Kovalev danced the Viennese Waltz to Ed Sheeran and Beyonce's ‘Perfect’. Receiving 29 points from the judges, the pair placed top of the table and wowed audiences with their graceful routine and beautiful lines.
What is the difference between the Waltz and Viennese Waltz?
There are many variations of the classic Waltz. The main difference between the Waltz and the Viennese Waltz is that the Viennese waltz is about twice as fast and is much more rotary than the slower waltzes. The dance form is characterised by a closed hold which involves partners facing and embracing each other. This was considered scandalous when the dance came to England in the 19th century. Both the Waltz and Viennese Waltz are performed to 3/4 time but look very different from one another due to the rotation of the Viennese Waltz.
What do ballroom dancers wear when performing the Waltz?
Compared to the Tango or Cha Cha Cha where dancers are in short dresses to show off the fast movements and footwork, the Waltz is performed in more elegant attire with female dancers wearing flowing ballgowns and male dancers in smart suits.
