Strike a pose! Why voguing is the hot new entertainment for New Year’s Eve

Voguing is totally en vogue once again thanks to the explosion of drag culture and mainstream pop artists. High-fashion vogue dancers, drag queens and Madonna tributes… we think it makes a fabulous entertainment option for New Year’s Eve.

Vogue, or voguing, is a highly stylized, modern house dance originating in the late 1980s that evolved out of New York’s Harlem ballroom scene of the 1960s where LGBT Latino and African Americans gathered to dress up, dance and socialise.

Gaining mainstream exposure when it was featured in Madonna's 1990 song and video Vogue, it was then showcased in the 1990 documentary Paris Is Burning which went on to win the Grand Jury Prize at the 1991 Sundance Film Festival.

The clip from Madonna’s Vogue music video introduced the world to voguing and since Madonna, this small community has had a far-reaching influence across mainstream culture, from musicians like Ariana Grande and Beyoncé to the catwalks of London Fashion Week and major television shows such as RuPaul’s Drag Race, and more recently FX’s dramatisation of Harlem’s ballroom scene, Pose.

In its modern form, voguing has become a global phenomenon that continues to evolve both stylistically and demographically and is becoming a hot new trend for entertainment.

What exactly is Voguing?

Inspired by the famous images of models in Vogue magazine, voguing is characterised by striking a series of poses as if the dancer is modelling for a photoshoot. Arm and leg movements are angular, linear, rigid, and move swiftly from one static position to another.

A series of five components are generally incorporated into the dance style: Hands (as described above), Catwalk, Duckwalk, Floorwork, and Spins and Dips. This video from the New York Times breaks down these movements:

Book a Madonna Tribute

One of Madonna’s biggest international hits, Vogue has enjoyed acclaim ever since its release in 1990.

The music video, directed by David Fincher, was shot in black and white and takes stylistic inspiration from the 1920s and 1930s, as well as the Harlem House Ball community. Madonna and her dancers can be seen voguing to different choreographed moves and the video has been ranked among the greatest music videos of all time.

Lyrically, the song is about escapism and enjoying yourself on the dance floor no matter who you are -  perfect for New Year’s Eve parties!

One of the most sought after Madonna tribute acts in the UK, this dynamic show features the undisputed Queen of Pop's greatest hits, along with the looks, the voice and the all-important voguing to make for a truly authentic experience.

Hire Drag Queens

RuPaul’s Drag Race, a reality TV series which has catapulted drag to the mainstream and permeated internet culture like no other, owes much of its language and format to vogue and Ballroom culture.

The TV show’s contestants, along with many more drag acts, can be seen performing acrobatic, high-impact dance routines that hark back to the underground LGBT subculture of the New York ballroom scene.

Ballroom’s roots go back to Harlem’s cross-dressing masquerade parties in the mid-19th century, which grew to attract crowds of thousands by the 1920s. It evolved into events in which people "walked" for trophies, prizes, and glory at events known as balls. Attendees dance, vogue, walk, pose, evaluate, and support one another in one or more of the numerous drag and performance competition categories.

One of our favourite drag queens, Drag Queen Poppy, is a glamorous entertainer with a collection of stunning outfits that offers a hilarious singing and dancing cabaret show. A fully trained dancer, she’ll knock out your guests with high kicking, stylish moves and jumps into splits.
