An Event Behind Bars?
Have you ever thought about hosting your next meeting or workshop in a Prison? No? Well why not! We assure you, inviting guests into this former Prison is not the usual jailbird experience. Offering the chance to get “locked up in luxury”, the former prison presents deluxe cells for a one of a kind experience. Boasting a minimalist interior, Het Arresthuis has been transformed into a premier venue offering guests the chance to host meetings, conferences and stay overnight in the stunningly refurbished cells. Dating back to 1863, many elements of the prison are still intact, giving the building a truly typical jail atmosphere. With the original cell doors, iron baulstrades and old cast-iron staircase still in place, the prison’s cell block offers a special location for small to medium scale events, accomodating up to 200 people. With opportunities for corporate companies to hire the exclusive, ‘Het Archief’ and ‘Het Pleidooi’ boardrooms, and stay in one of the former prison cells, it is safe to say that none of your guests will be subjected to the hardships of bygone days in Roermond’s former prison.

If that’s not unique enough for you, then how about Lab 111, a former pathological anatomy laboratory where the deceased were once examined! Offering enough space to host an event for 5 – 500 people, it is now an important venue for the creative sector. Located in Arie Biemondstraa, the building is regularly used as a meeting place for art exhibitions and workshops. An attractive venue, the former lab offers space to host events ranging from corporate dinners, conferences, workshops, lectures and private events. The laboratory’s former auditorium is the largest space furnished to bear the resemblance of a black box theatre and is particularly suitable for lectures, workshops and multimedia communications. Another, slightly controversial space due to the nature of its former function, is the chapel. This exceptionally unique space is ideal for meetings and events for up to 100 people.

Having developed from a thriving industrial society to a service society, Holland has been left with hundreds of purpose-built buildings, factories and warehouses. Fortunately, many of these have been given a second life, including former cheese factories, Stork Machine warehouses and textiles factories. The Tollensfabriek, located in Rotterdam, is one of Holland’s industrial gems and is a 250m2 Dutch paint factory. Now an open plan space for meetings, workshops and events, the former factory offers one large and light industrial space, which has been divided into five different areas. The space offers guests the chance to hold traditional and informal meetings and workshops with seating for up to 60 people complete with large whiteboard walls and wireless Internet facilities. The open plan layout of the venue mimics the new, flexible and more relaxed way of working.

Since two-thirds of Holland is vulnerable to flooding, we figured that water is an important theme! Opened in 2010 and located in Rotterdam, the Drijvend Paviljoen is perhaps the most modern and unique looking venue on our list. Consisting of three biomes of which one is a theatre/lecture hall with seating for up to 150 guests, these climate-proof, floating pavilions sit on the surface of Rotterdam’s famous Rijnhaven and can host up to 350 guests. Local suppliers supply catering and there is also an outdoor terrace in front of the pavilion for guests to use as a meeting space during the warmer months.
Another perfect location for those interested in aquatic venues is SS Rotterdam, the Netherland’s largest passenger ship. Built in the 1950s, this former cruise liner has sailed the seven seas and is now permanently docked in the Rotterdam harbour. A perfect venue for meetings, conferences, weddings and more, the ship offers a unique experience, beautifully overlooking the river Maas and the dynamic cityscape of Rotterdam. Over the past 50 years, royals and celebrities have visited the ship, including, Queen Beatrix, Princess Grace of Monaco and Frank Sinatra!
