In recent years rustic country weddings have become all the rage. Synonymous with heart-warming personal touches, creativity and a DIY details, a rustic wedding style gives couples complete freedom to express themselves and create a wedding that reflects exactly who they are! Here’s our guide to creating your beautiful rustic wedding in the West Country…

The Dream Setting

There are quite literally hundreds of beautiful rustic wedding venues in the West Country, from impressive converted barns and farms to yurts and tipis! With such a myriad of choice it is really hard to narrow down the list and find ‘the one’ so we’ve done some of the hard work for you and picked out our favourites from the bunch!

The Old Oak Farm is a stunning rustic wedding reception situated in 9 acres of rolling countryside just 12 miles from Taunton and 14 from Yeovil.  Not just your average marque it is filled with unique and quirky touches and the venue also offers a quaint stable bar and enchanting ‘Secret Garden’. For guests that are ready to completely embrace your rustic country theme they can camp over night or for the entire weekend in the camping field! Whilst the bride and groom can enjoy their beautiful ‘bridal hut’ furnished with luxury bedding, electric log burner and delicious breakfast hamper. This is a truly charming venue in the heart of the  Devon countryside.

Meanwhile in Cornwall, Cornish Tipi Weddings capture the essence of ‘eco-chic’ with their unique venue location in a 16 acre secret valley just off the Cornish coast engulfed in beautiful wild flowers and ancient oaks. Couples can wed in the fully licensed pavilion deep in the heart of the valley with space for up to 50 people inside and 50 outside on the surrounding decking. The large tipi, Moroccan marquee and Capri tent are on offer for the wedding breakfast and / or reception! Guests can then stay in tipis for the night or weekend. With photo opportunities aplenty in the wooden dens, by the lake, in the wild flower glade this outdoor wedding venue is truly beautiful and perfect for 20 to 200 plus guests!

For a mix of rustic living and a country-chic, Shilstone House in South Devon offers the best of both worlds. Couples can wed on the steps of the impressive manor house with their guests gathered on the adjacent lawn, in a marquee in the stunning gardens or inside the house itself or stand alone converted barn. The estate’s 18 strong yurt village offers unique accommodation for guests, combining all the romance of camping with comfort and luxury.

Now that we’ve covered the tents, tipis and yurts… let’s get onto the barns!  Situated on the edge of the wilds of South Dartmoor, in Tavistock, Ever After: A Dartmoor Wedding is a stunning rustic family run wedding venue licensed to hold civil marriage and civil partnership ceremonies. An open-sided oak-framed barn offers a quaint rustic ceremony location for couples to wed. The outdoor deck and beautifully manicured lawns give plenty of outdoors space for guests to enjoy drinks and lawn games! In less-than perfect weather the stunning glass roofed terrace and clear-walled marque offer idyllic indoor space. To complete the rustic dream, the newly weds are invited to stay in a delightfully refurbished 18th century cottage with vaulted ceilings and a wood-burning stove.

On a grander scale, The Great Barn in Exeter is a magnificent space with seating for up to 190 guests and one of only a few rustic wedding venues with a capacity of this size that isn’t a marquee. Providing plenty of picturesque photo opportunities with its sprawling gardens, walled courtyard, charming cottages and barn restored to its original 15th century design, this is a truly beautiful rural wedding venue in the West Country. Attached to the barn is the Roundhouse which works well as a bar area, and a traditional canvas marque opposite the barn offers additional space for larger weddings.

This is, of course, only a small sample from a long list of venues. If none of these tickle your fancy check out these websites for some more inspiration…

Pinterest is the Holy Grail when it comes to finding DIY and budget rustic wedding decorations that will add that pastoral touch without breaking the bank. Here are a few of our favourites that we have gleaned from our ‘research’…

Hay bales – Especially ideal if your venue has some outside space, hay bales not only add an authentic country look they also create excellent extra seating!

Twine – Sometimes the simplest of things create the best effects! Whether you use it to tie up bunches of balloons, wrap around the outside of wine and beer bottles for table centrepieces, or use it in your invitations, twine gives that distinctly rustic look with minimal effort.

Wild flowers – Usually cheaper than bouquets and flower arrangements that use out of season blooms, wild flowers give a delicate rustic touch whilst keeping the costs down. You and our bridal party could even take part in a floral workshop and learn how to create you rown arrangements if you're planning on growing your own flowers.

Bunting – Reminiscent of village fetes and summer garden parties, bunting will add a cutesy country feel to your wedding – even better if you make it yourself!

We can supply all of the above and more to ensur that the décor and furniture for your wedding in the South West is on point! Check out our furniture, flower and props suppliers here
